DIY Water Marble Nails

Classy meet edgy. Recreate these stunning water marble nails with this easy step-by-step tutorial!

DIY Water Marble Nails

     Recently, we posted an article about our favorite minimalist nail art designs and today we’re totally drooling over this stone water marble nail art. Because we can’t get enough of its chic, easy design, we’re recreating the look with this step-by-step tutorial that’s so easy all you need is a few materials and 20 minutes.

Products Used In This Tutorial

  • Nail polish (3 colors)
  • Plastic wrap
  • Warm water
  • An alcohol-based liquid in a spray bottle (can be hand sanitizer, hair spray, perfume, or body spray)
  • Colorless top coat

I’m excited, you’re excited, so let’s get started!

Step 1: Apply base coat
Your base coat can be any color. We recommend trying this look with a black base coat. IMAGE VIA Cute Polish

Step 2: Ball up the plastic
     This will be your tool to creating the stone marble effect.
The secret to creating a nice marble design is plastic wrap! IMAGE VIA Cute Polish

Step 3: Paint a light gray polish (color optional) on the plastic wrap
     Dab the excess off on paper.
The nail polish you’re applying here should be a lighter shade of the color you want your pattern to be. IMAGE VIA Cute Polish

Step 4: Gently dab the painted plastic on your nails
     This will add touches of light gray on your nail that will create dimension in the final look.
Lightly dab the painted plastic onto the nail to give your design dimension. IMAGE VIA Cute Polish

Step 5: Drop a dark gray nail polish in room temp water. Repeat this 4-5 times.
     If the polish does not spread, you’ll need to go back and adjust the temperature of the water or try a newer polish.
The polish must diffuse in the water. IMAGE VIA Cute Polish

Step 6: Using your alcohol-based liquid, spray 1-2 times on the polish to break it up.
     This will create the desired marble effect.
Lightly spray the polish to create the marbled effect. IMAGE VIA Cute Polish

Step 7: Choose an area of the polish you like best and dip your finger in.
     After 10 to 15 seconds, use a toothpick to remove any polish that’s still in the water.

Step 8: Remove your finger from the water and clean up any excess polish with a cotton ball dipped in acetone.
Wipe off the rest of the nail polish with acetone. IMAGE VIA Cute Polish

Step 9: Seal the look with a fast-drying top coat.
Seal your design with a clear top coat. IMAGE VIA Cute Polish

     There you have it! Beautiful water marble nails in 9 easy steps!

Here’s How To Get A Professional Manicure At Home

LA’s top nail artist shares her tips and tricks for achieving the perfect manicure at home. Keep on reading to learn how!

The Perfect DIY At-Home Manicure
     While we love nothing more than going to our favorite nail salon and getting our nails did, we also understand and accept the financial reality of our bank account which makes trips to the salon a privilege rather than a right.

     However, that doesn’t make going without our mani/pedis any easier. Instead, we’ve had to adapt to the good ol’ DIY approach: shaking off our dusty nail polishes, attempting to push back our cuticles and filing our nails only to see the finished result and think, “Meh. That could’ve turned out way better.”

     Thankfully, there’s light at the end of the traumatic at-home manicure tunnel and it comes in the diaphanous form of an infographic from one of LA’s top manicurists, Madeline Poole.

     Madeline goes over every step of the process — from filing to top coats — to make manicures great again! Your days of fearing the at-home manicure are long gone…

     Save it, pin it or bookmark this infographic for future reference.

     With this handy infographic, every manicure can be a professional one and you won’t have to break the bank either.

DIY Shattered Glass Nail Art Tutorial

This viral trend is not going anywhere, anytime soon. Learn how to DIY shattered glass nail art with this step-by-step tutorial.

DIY Shattered Glass Nail Art Tutorial

     Without South Korea, our skin would be in shambles and we would be entrenched in a life where shattered glass nail art doesn’t exist. While it certainly seems as if we can’t get enough of Korean beauty (probably because we can’t), there are so many great trends and looks to try that we can’t help but write about all of them. This leads to a lot of posts with the word “Korea” in there, something we’re definitely not opposed to (they clearly have their beauty game on lock). So, bear with us as we fangirl for a bit about shattered glass nails and how it’s, quite possibly, one of the most inventive trends of the social media age.

     Created with iridescent cellophane, shattered glass nails are an easy look that gives your nails the appearance of having been dipped in shards of broken glass. The result is all beauty, no pain.

     We’re sure you’ve heard of this trend before, so enough chitchat and let’s get right down to it.

Step 1

     Every manicure begins with soft, moisturized cuticles, so grab your favorite cuticle oil (if you have yet to find a favorite, the oil used in this tutorial is NCLA Treatment So Rich Cuticle Oil) and massage those cuticles like your life depends on it.

Soften and moisturize the cuticles with your HG cuticle oil. image via Cute Polish

Step 2
     Once the oil has been absorbed by the cuticles, wipe off any excess oil on the nail with rubbing alcohol. Removing the oil from your nails will make the manicure last longer without chipping.   Be sure to only remove the oil from the nail, not the cuticle.

Step 3
  Let’s start with a base coat. The one used here is Quo by Orly Strong Bond.

     Base coats help nail polish stick to the nail bed for a longer period of time, so be sure to always use one and apply a thin layer.
Apply a light base coat in order to prolong the lifespan of your nail color. image via Cute Polish

Step 4
     After the base coat dries, apply black nail polish as your base color. The nail used in this tutorial is Formula X by Sephora in the color Dark Matter.

     While this look can be done with any base color, the most striking shattered glass effect is with black. Feel free to use white, emerald green or neon pink. A viewer recommended trying this look with matte black polish in order to make the glass even more pronounced.
Apply a black base coat for an even more striking shattered glass effect. image via Cute Polish

Step 5
     Now we’re going to create the shattered glass effect. First, pick up a packet of iridescent cellophane from your local craft store.
To create your glass shards, buy iridescent cellophane. image via Cute Polish

     Next, cut the cellophane into small triangles (these will be your “shards”). The triangles can be in a variety of sizes and triangular shapes. Don’t be afraid to get creative.

     Careful not to cut yourself now.

Step 6
     Before applying the shards, apply a clear top coat.

Step 7
     Now we’re getting to the fun part: the cellophane shards! Pick up each shard with a wax pencil or wet toothpick.
Pick up each shard and carefully place on the nails. image via Cute Polish

     When placing the shards, leave a little space between each one to make it genuinely look like broken glass.
Be sure to leave space between cellophane pieces for a shattered glass effect. image via Cute Polish

Step 8
     Snip any outlying edges of cellophane off your nails.
Remove outlying edges with scissors. image via Cute Polish

Step 9
     Now it’s time to seal the deal with a top coat. The top coat in this tutorial is Gel-Setter by Essie.

     You may need to apply two coats to keep the shards in place.

GREEN SPLASH NAIL ART – DIY TUTORIAL

     The look of these nails is very similar to how quail eggs look and it is a combination of two shades of green. If you tried out nail tutorials before that involve you to use water, it is great, if not, it is great again, a good opportunity to start trying out some. Once you will make some, you will get into the fever and will enjoy doing different models and patterns. Today’s tutorial is very similar to some we presented you in the past and the uniqueness of it is given by the colors used.

What you will need:
– dark green nail polish;
– light pearled green nail polish;
– a small container with water;
– some alcohol in a spray bottle.
– some acetone and q-tips to remove the excess polish;
– top coat (optional).
Directions:
     1. Paint all of your nails with the dark green shade and let the polish dry very well;
     2. Take the small container with water and start putting a few drops of the other polish in it (the light green one).
     3. Spray some alcohol over the polish.
     4. Stick one nail into the water.
     5. Repeat the process until all of your nails are done.
     6. Clean the excess polish from skin and let your nails dry very well.
     7. Optionally, use a top coat over them and wait everything to dry. Your nails are done!

HOW TO MAKE GRADIENT MERMAID NAILS – DIY NAIL ART

     When we were kids, at one point we all would have wanted to be or become a mermaid. All the movies and cartoons that had mermaids in it made us be charmed by their strength and beauty. Even if you have got over that fantasy long time ago you can still be chic making some mermaid inspired nails for yourself.
What you will need:
– turquoise nail polish;
– royal blue and emerald green nail polish (preferably with glitter in them);
– sponge;
– some fishnet;
– small nail decorations that look like gems;
– top coat;
– acetone and q-tips to clean out the excess polish on skin.

Directions:
     1. Start with applying one layer of turquoise nail polish on your nails and let them dry very well.
     2. Take the sponge and apply the other polishes to it, the green and blue, because you will have to dab them over every nail. Before dabbing make sure you hold the fishnet over the nail.
     3. Repeat for each and every nail, and soak the sponge with polish as many times you need.
     4. Take the small decorations and apply them randomly here and there to give a much shinny effect to your nails.
     5. Apply top coat over then let the polish dry very well.
     6. Clean all the polish from the skin if there is any there and you are done with making mermaid nails.

Nail Art Tutorial: Tribal / Aztec Print Over Neon Gradient

x

Brushes used:
Detailer brush from this nail art brush set:
A regluar, tiny paintbrush from a craftstore, trimmed to make thinner.
Here’s a video on how you can do it yourself:

Steps:
1. Apply a basecoat and paint your nails white. This is important especially because we’re using neons because this will make the colors pop! Let this dry COMPLETELY

2. Apply some liquid latex around your nail. You can also use tape

3. Take out a makeup sponge and make sure there’s no dust particles on it. You can do this by taking some tape and just firmly stick on the sponge and then remove it.

5. Paint yellow and pink polish onto the sponge, slightly overlapping each other

6. Dab the sponge on your nail to transfer the polish. Move it a bit up and down and from side to side to make sure you get polish on the whole nail and to blend the colors

7. Repeat the last two steps on each nail, making each layer dry a couple of minutes before adding another one. I just recently realised that you can do two nails without reapplying polish to the sponge and this saves you some time and polish :D

8. Keep adding more layers until you’re satisfied with the gradient.

9. Let everything dry for a few minutes

10. Remove the liquid latex / tape and clean up with a flat brush dipped in polish remover

11. Apply a fast drying topcoat and let dry completely

12. Make the pattern as shown, I’m using black acrylic paint. If you make ant mistakes you can easily scrape off the paint with a toothpick and just redo it

13. When you’re done, let everything dry for a couple of minutes and apply a fast drying topcoat. If you’re like me and what matte nails, just apply a matte topcoat after the shiny one c:
